A new species of Scymnobius Casey (Coleoptera, Coccinellidae, Scymnini) from Pernambuco, Brazil. Scymnobius pernambucensis sp. nov. from Pernambuco, Brazil, is described and illustrated. This is the third species of this genus recorded from Brazil.

ABSTRACT: Insect-transmitted viruses cause some of the most damaging and economically important diseases of crop plants, especially in tropical and subtropical regions. The geminiviruses, a group of single-stranded DNA viruses with unique twined icosahedral virus particles, are responsible for many of these diseases. Of particular importance are the geminiviruses transmitted by whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci), which are in the genus Begomovirus. Antibiosis effects of wild bean lines containing arcelin on Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) biotype B (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae) Anais da SEB

The biology of Bemisia tabaci biotype B (Genn.) on bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) genotypes containing arcelin in the seeds was evaluated. Also, biochemical screening of seeds and leaves material of these genotypes were carried out in order to verify if traces of arcelin could be found in its leaves. Aptitud biológica de poblaciones de Bemisis tabaci (Gennadius) biotipo B (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) con diferente susceptibilidad al insecticida Thiamethoxam Colegio de Postgraduados

En dos poblaciones de campo de Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) biotipo B cuyas generaciones anteriores habían sido seleccionadas con el insecticida neonicotinoide thiamethoxam (NEO-R y NEO-N) y una susceptible a insecticidas (SUSC) se determinó el nivel de respuesta al insecticida thiamethoxam, así como las tablas de vida y fertilidad. A nivel de CL95, la población NEO-R tuvo una proporción de resistencia (PR95) a thiamethoxam de 8.8× y una tasa intrínseca de incremento (rm) de 0.072. Assessment of physiological aspects of three tomato genotypes infested by Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) biotype B (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) Neotropical Entomology

The performance of three tomato genotypes (PI 1134417, LA 716 and of Bruna VFN hybrid) was assessed during infestation by Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) biotype B, in relation to the physiological aspects of plants attacked and not attacked by the insect. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse at environmental temperature. Thirty-day-old plants were artificially infested with 100 insects/plant for ten days. The Bruna VFN hybrid was damaged physiologically with lower height and mean number of leaves per plant than in the non attacked plants, ten days after infestation. Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) is one of the most important pests of cassava in Africa and several countries of Asia due to the damage caused by direct feeding, the excretion of honeydew, and its capacity as a vector of cassava mosaic geminivirus. There is a general consensus that B. tabaci is a complex of morphologically indistinguishable populations with different biotypes. In the Americas, the polyphagous biotype B does not appear to feed on cassava. Brazil is one of the main tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) producers worldwide. Nevertheless, considerable part of the production is lost due to Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) B biotype attacks. Resistant plants can be an important method for controlling this pest in an integrated pest management. Tests for evaluating some biological aspects of B. tabaci were carried out on 18 tomato genotypes, in controlled laboratory greenhouse conditions. Detection and partial characterization of a carlavirus causing stem necrosis of soybean in Brazil Trop. Plant Pathol.

Stunting and stem necrosis were noticed in soybeans (Glycine max) grown in 2000/2001 in West Central Brazil the same condition was also observed in the following year in plantations as far as 2,000 km from the initial area. Based on transmission (mechanical, graft, insect vector), purification and serology, electron microscopy and molecular studies the causal agent was determined to be a whitefly-borne carlavirus which is possibly related to Cowpea mild mottle virus (CpMMV).

Whiteflies are phytophagous insects, whose nymphs and adults suck the phloem sap, causing direct damage due to host plant weakness. In tomato (Lycopersicon spp.) crops, they are important vectors of limiting fitoviruses. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of Lycopersicon spp. genotypes on Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius, 1889) biotype B development under greenhouse conditions. Diversity analysis of Bemisia tabaci biotypes: RAPD, PCR-RFLP and sequencing of the ITS1 rDNA region Genet. Mol. Biol.

The Bemisia tabaci complex is formed by approximately 41 biotypes, two of which (B and BR) occur in Brazil. In this work we aimed at obtaining genetic markers to assess the genetic diversity of the different biotypes. In order to do that we analyzed Bemisia tabaci biotypes B, BR, Q and Cassava using molecular techniques including RAPD, PCR-RFLP and sequencing of the ITS1 rDNA region. The analyses revealed a high similarity between the individuals of the B and Q biotypes, which could be distinguished from the BR individuals. A phylogenetic tree based on ITS1 rDNA sequence was constructed. This is the first report of the ITS1 rDNA sequence of Bemisia tuberculata and of the BR biotype of B. tabaci.

Integrated Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) management requires quantitative knowledge on the mechanisms of persistence of pest populations in non-commercial host plants. We investigated B. tabaci oviposition preference among tomato and four weed species, and the insect population fluctuation under field conditions in the semi-arid region. At weekly intervals, we determined the level (number of eggs and nymphs per leaf) and the density of infestation (number of eggs and nymphs per leaf area) in all species. Economic impact analysis of marker-assisted breeding for resistance to pests and post harvest deterioration in cassava AgEcon

Marker-assisted breeding could have a major impact in relieving productivity constraints that cannot as easily or rapidly be relieved by conventional breeding alone. This paper estimates the benefits of using marker-assisted breeding, as compared to conventional breeding alone, in developing cassava varieties resistant to cassava mosaic disease, green mite, whitefly and post-harvest physiological deterioration in Nigeria, Ghana and Uganda. We aimed to characterize the population genetic structure within and among five Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) populations collected from different host plants and geographic regions by using microssatelites as a molecular marker. The objective of this work was to determine the effects of rainfall, temperature, predators, parasitoids, plant age, leaf chemical composition, levels of leaf nitrogen and potassium, besides density of leaf trichomes, on attack intensity of Bemisia tabaci biotype B on the Cucumis sativus. Surveys were conducted to identify whitefly pests of papaya in the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. The whitefly species Trialeurodes variabilis (Quaintance) is reported for the first time in the state, where it was found on papaya at six locations in Sooretama and Linhares municipalities in October to December 2002 and June 2003.
